Overview

This 2-day course is designed to provide a clear understanding of the IMS technologies and services. It includes a discussion on the IMS markets including benefits to the end user and operators. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) is extensively reviewed to enable a greater understanding of the IMS architecture and procedures. Examples of IMS services are used throughout the course, demonstrating the principles of security, QoS and call flows in the service environment. The course also discusses other service based technologies such as OSA Parlay, JAIN and CAMEL and considers the Interworking possibilities between these and IMS.

Course Objectives

At the end of the course, the delegate will be able to:
  • Understand the need for, and requirements of the IMS System
  • Describe possible IMS services
  • Demonstrate the basic principles of SIP
  • Sketch the main components of the IMS and describe their function
  • Show how roaming is supported by IMS and SIP
  • Explain the current Telecoms Marketplace with respect to key technologies and how they are likely to be deployed
    • Understand the need for, and requirements of the IMS System
    • Show how IMS relates to the UMTS architecture
    • Describe possible IMS services
    • Demonstrate the basic principles of SIP, SDP and RTP
    • Sketch the main components of the IMS and describe their function
    • Show how roaming is supported by IMS and SIP
    • Describe the mechanisms behind service provision in the IMS
    • Compare CAMEL, JAIN and Parlay with the IMS
    • Discuss how QoS may be provisioned in the IMS
    • Describe the security procedures used
